Latin name : Cucumis sativus
The cucumber is believed to have originated from India or Thailand. Primarily cucumbers are green in colour; however it is possible to find white, yellow and orange cucumbers that come in an assortment of shapes and sizes.
Cucumber plants grow in 2 forms: vining and bush. Vines scramble along the ground or clamber up trellises, while bush types, such as Burpless Bush Hybrid, form a more compact plant. Generally, vining cucumbers yield more fruit throughout the growing season.
As the cucumber matures, the seeds become bitter in taste and need to be removed before consumption.
The cucumber belongs to the same botanical family as the melon, squash and pumpkin.
