All About Opuntia (Prickly Pear)
The prickly pear represents about a dozen species of the Opuntia genus. The Opuntia is a member of the cactus family giving the pear its prickly forename.
Native to the Western Hemisphere, the prickly pear is eaten globally in different forms. Processed the fruit is often used to flavour vodka and lemonade.

It is imperative to peel the prickly pear carefully; the outer skin contains glochids, these short spikes can easily become imbedded within the skin and cause discomfort.
