Latin name : Prunus spinosa
The Sloe is a species of wild plum grown from the blackthorn.
Similar in appearance to the cherry plum and the damson¸ the plum is naturally sour in taste. Most commonly known as a key ingredient in sloe gin, the sloe is used in port and various wines also. The wine made from sloes is considered a delicacy in many European countries.
Sloe gin is not in fact a true gin, it is a liqueur made from an infusion of gin, vodka and fruit.
