Originating in South America there are dozens of varieties of tomatoes which are now widely grown and cultivated.
As a member of the nightshade family, it is a relative of the potato and eggplant. Ranging widely in size, colour and shape.
In 1893 in America the tomato was classified as a vegetable for trade purposes.
