Creating a healthy children’s snack

When Manchester-based Dean Dempsey came to us with his idea for a healthy, sugar-free but filling snack for active children, we jumped at the chance to help here at Cobell.

Our flavour experts in our New Product Development lab swung into action and assisted Dean with his vision to create Naturelly Jelly Juice, which is a thirst-quenching, tummy-filling, children’s snack juice.

Dean explained: “Prior to becoming a father, I headed up a major FMCG marketing agency and one of my clients produced a gel drink for cyclists, new to the UK market, but big in Japan. I looked into this and found a good selection of options over there but we just didn’t have these in the UK at the time.”

But it was only when Dean and his wife Joanne had their two daughters, Alivia and Della, now aged eight and five, that they realised how applicable this new food group could be.

“Trying to find healthy snacks was challenging for us, especially when we were on days out or were picking the girls up from school or nursery. They’d be hungry and we’d need an ‘on-the-go’ refreshment that would fill them up just a little, until dinner time.

“So, along with my brother Liam, we put our heads together to find out the things our kids and their friends loved and came up with the idea of jelly and juice. But how could we make it healthy and not full of sugar?

“This is where Cobell stepped in to help us. First of all, we discovered this special gelatine free, wibbly jelly made from Lily Plants called Gellan Gum. This clever jelly helps fill little tummies up until meal time with it being a natural dietary fibre and by mixing it with fruit juice it helps stop those cravings for sugary snacks.

“We also made sure we didn’t add any sugar or sweeteners, or artificial colours, or artificial flavours or artificial preservatives! Being parents ourselves, we only wanted natural ingredients for our little ones. Our juice comes straight from squeezed fruit, making Naturelly sweet and healthy by nature with nothing naughty.

“Plus, the good news is, it’s only 36 kcal and 7g, which is 1.5 teaspoons, of naturally occurring fruit sugars per pouch. Also, as it’s a jelly it means less mess in the back of the car on journeys. It is designed to appeal to health-conscious parents with active kids aged from 12 months to nine-years-old.”
