We all know we've got to consume less sugar

Our New Product Development (NPD) team is exploring ways of using other ingredients to help give a similar taste to sugar for our clients.

Our Development Manager in NPD, Jenny Dolling, explains: “We’re looking at using fruit and vegetable juices naturally lower in sugar, natural flavourings, to help lift the flavours, so you don’t notice they are less sweet, and high intensity sweeteners to enable us to take calories out of drinks.

“That’s where our expertise comes in, to match the right options to each brand’s needs. It’s a tricky business weaning the population off sugar, but we’re all going to have to understand, like with salt, that we need to expect to consume less.”
Our in-house NPD laboratory is staffed by an experienced technical team, with years of industry expertise between them.

Chris Baker is our NPD Manager. He has a Bsc in Combined Science (Biology and Chemistry) and has previously worked for Bottlegreen Drinks as Production/New Product Development Manager.

Chris joined us in 2007 and was also the Founder/Owner of Five Valleys Cordials a private brand with national distribution through Waitrose, which was bought by Frobishers in 2016.

Ella Meadows is our NPD Technologist. She started her career at Refresco Gerber as a samples technician. After three and a half years learning the NPD process, she was promoted to Technologist and looked after Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and own brand accounts for four years.

Before joining us, she moved to Accolade Wines as a Technical Team leader, shift managing a team of six so she could further her technical experience and knowledge within the manufacturing industry and, also, her responsibilities.

Isabelle Needham also works in our lab as NPD Assistant. She went to the University of Southampton and studied BSc Biology with a placement year at Kew Gardens.

Marc Smerdon, Development Technologist, is also part of the team. He studied at Cardiff Metropolitan University (Food Science and Technology) and spent the four years before joining us with Greggs the Bakers and Samworth Brothers (Kensey Foods). His role at Cobell is customer-focused on beverage brands and helping start-up companies.

Our team members are reactive to customer requirements and on hand for any support required. This allows our customers to blend and produce exciting new flavours using innovative ingredient combinations.
